Manifesto
You swim in a very deep toxic sea of media indoctrination. Perpetual currents of information drag and push you far out and away from any island of quiet. You are bombarded with wave after wave that aims to convince you to consume, consume and consume some more.

Alone we can sink to frighteningly bleak depths.

But together we can hold tight. Together we can make anchor. And we can form our selves as a bridge, a platform, an island, to climb up and out of the waters edge to see that another world is possible. In fact, another world exists.

  • 24 per second (116)
A technical overview on the human eye and the illusion of movement in movies.
  • The Skeptical Inquirer magazine (Spring 1992) (105)
A well researched article from the Skeptical Inquirer magazine (Spring 1992) that explores the scientific experiments around Subliminal Persuasion.
  • O'Reilly on Advertising (91)
O'Reilly on Advertising is an excellent CBC program that generates a lot of good discussion in our home. O'Reilly has a long history as a creator of the media that we are deconstructing here. The show is often humourous and well written. However there is a scant amount of critical analysis regarding how advertisements and capitalism are the ultimate demise of the planet. I guess that is where we step in...
  • Marge Piercy- Poetry In Revolt (70)
Piercy's poetry tends to be highly personal free verse, and often addresses the same concern with feminist and social issues. Her work shows commitment to the dream of social change (what she might call, in Judaic terms, tikkun olam), rooted in story, the wheel of the Jewish year, and a range of landscapes/settings. ~Wikipedia
    Check out "The Low Road".
  • Girlpower (67)
A flash animation created by the health department from the government of Sweden that lets you unmake, step by step, the 20 hours a photo of a female cover model receives. A powerful example of the basic formula seen on every checkout corner.
  • Portal to anarchism (67)
A good "portal to anarchy" including news, music and writing.
  • Adbusters (65)
Adbusters was once the cultural epicentre of media deconstruction. I subscribed to it for years. Then the messages and script began repeating itself Ad-nauseum. So I stopped reading the magazine. Now the magazine has moved to a place beyond any category. Being quite enflamed and sometimes consumed by the darkness of our times, I can barely open the magazine- I find it quite terrifying.
  • Victoria LETS (65)
Victoria LETS has been one of the longest standing alternative economy communities. Using barter, trade and a virtual 'green dollar' currency, members meet at potlucks to network and meet their needs off the harmful capitalist grid.
  • Food Not Bombs (48)
The first group was formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists. Food Not Bombs is an all volunteer organization dedicated to nonviolence. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process. Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in city parks to anyone without restriction. The groups also serve free vegetarian meals at protests and other events.
  • Earth First! (46)
Earth First! is working hard on many levels to save the earth's remaining sacred natural land and it's inhabitants from the destructive greed of corporations.

Earth First! was founded in 1979 in response to a lethargic, compromising, and increasingly corporate environmental community. Earth First! takes a decidedly different tack towards environmental issues. We believe in using all the tools in the tool box, ranging from grassroots organizing and involvement in the legal process to civil disobedience and monkeywrenching.
